“Radium Girls” เป็นการจัดแสดงผลงานภาพถ่ายแนวทดลองของ “Claude Estebe” ศิลปินช่างภาพชาวฝรั่งเศสที่นอกจากนั้นเรื่องศิลปะแล้ว เขายังมีความเชี่ยวชาญเกี่ยวกับเรื่องวัฒนธรรมและประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะภาพถ่ายของประเทศญี่ปุ่นโดยเฉพาะเป็นอาจารย์สอนในมหาวิทยาลัยอีกด้วย เคยมีผลงานวิชาการเกี่ยวกับญี่ปุ่นตีพิมพ์เป็นหนังสือออกมาชื่อว่า “Le crépuscule des Geishas” (แปลเป็นอังกฤษคือ “The Last Geisha”)

คำว่า Radium Girls เดิมทีเป็นชื่อเรียกกลุ่มผู้หญิงที่ทำงานอยู่ในโรงงานนาฬิกาแห่งหนึ่งของอเมริกา ช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 19 สมัยนั้นโลกยังไม่มีความรู้ในเรื่องสารนรกัมมันตรังสีเท่าไรนัก พวกเธอรับหน้าที่ป้ายสีเรืองแสงลงไปบนเลขบอกเวลาของหน้าปัดแต่ละเรือน แต่หารู้ไม่ว่านั่นมันคือการทำงานตายผ่อนส่งที่ไม่มีใครรู้ตัว เพียงไม่นานสาวๆที่ทำงานก็พากันป่วยและล้มตายอย่างไม่ทราบสาเหตุเรื่อยๆ จนในเวลาต่อมาเกิดการฟ้องร้องกัน กับเจ้าของบริษัทที่ดูจะรู้อยู่แล้วว่าสารนี้มีอันตรายต่อมนุษย์ กลายเป็นคดีที่มีชื่อว่า “Radium Girls” (สาวกัมมันตรังสี) ซึ่ง Claude เห็นว่ามันมีความใกล้เคียงกับแนวคิดหลักในงานครั้งนี้ของเขา ควันหลงจากเหตุการณ์โรงไฟฟ้าปรมาณูระเบิดที่จังหวัดฟุกุชิม่าเมื่อปี 2011 ที่ผ่านมา เป็นโศกนาฏกรรมครั้งใหญ่ของญี่ปุ่นที่ตัวศิลปินต้องการจะนำเสนอมุมมอง และความรู้สึกเสียดสีบางอย่างผ่านทางศิลปะภาพถ่าย เลยเป็นเหตุให้หยิบเอามาตั้งเป็นชื่อผลงานชุดนี้ว่า Radium Girls ด้วยซะเลย

Claude เลือกสร้างงานชุดนี้ของเขาออกมาเป็นลักษณะภาพถ่ายแนวทดลอง งานแต่ละชิ้นมี form และการใช้สีเรืองแสงสีสดๆบาดตา ดูแล้วให้ความรู้สึก Surreal (เหนือจริง) ที่ในขณะเดียวกันมันก็มีบางมุมที่ออกมาดูแล้วจริงอย่างบอกไม่ถูก คงเป็นเพราะว่าพื้นฐานแล้ว ภาพที่ได้จากการถ่ายรูปมันเกิดจากการบันทึกภาพที่มีอยู่จริงบนโลกใบนี้อยู่แล้ว เอกลักษณ์ในงานชุดนี้คือ เขาเลือกใช้ Subject ที่มีความเป็นอัตลักษณ์ของวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นชัดเจนอยู่ในตัวมันเอง อย่างเช่น หุ่นยนต์กันดั้ม, ก๊อตซิลล่า, ตัวการ์ตูนสาวน้อยปรมาณู, รวมไปถึง Barbie ของปลอมแบบฉบับเอเชียก็ยังมี ซึ่งในผลงานแต่ละชิ้นเขาจะใช้สีเรืองแสงใส่ไว้ในจุดต่างๆของตัวแบบ หรือมบางทีก็ใช้ ไฟ LED ฝังลงไปในตัวหุ่นเลยก็มี แถมที่แปลกไปกว่านั้นคือแต่ละภาพนำเสนอโดยใช้มุมกล้องClose-Up แบบใกล้สุดๆ และยังเลือกใช้ Depth of Field ที่น้อยมากๆอีกด้วย ทำให้ Subject แต่ละรูปดูเด่น โดดออกมาจากแบ็คกราวด์และโฟร์กราวด์ทันที คงเพราะด้วยกรรมวิธีพิศดาร ทั้งมุมภาพและการใช้สีอารมณ์แปลกๆพวกนี้ล่ะ ที่ทำให้ภาพถ่ายชุดนี้มันหนีขอบข่ายของโลกความเป็นจริงที่เราคุ้นๆตากันออกไปได้…

โดยรวมแล้วนิทรรศการ Radium Girls นับเป็นนิทรรศการภาพถ่ายที่น่าสนใจสำหรับคนรักงานศิลปะทุกแขนง เพราะแกนหลักของงานชุดนี้สิ่งสำคัญมันอยู่ตรงที่ตัวศิลปินเขาต้องการจะบอกอะไรกับเรามากกว่าเรื่องการถ่ายภาพ ถ้าใครที่รักการตีความ แนวคิด Concept นี่ยิ่งพลาดไม่ได้เข้าไปใหญ่ เพราะแต่ละชิ้นจะมี ชื่อผลงาน ที่ดูแล้วชวนเสียดสีและมีความหมายช่วยทำให้งานชุดนี้มีพลังมากขึ้นไปอีก ใครที่สนใจก็สามารถไปเยี่ยมชมกันได้ที่ Toot Yung Gallery งานจะมีถึงวันที่ 13 ตุลาคม จากการกลับมาของแกลลอรี่ตูดยุงนี่ถือเป็นงานที่สองของพวกเขา กับงานแสดงผลงานภาพถ่ายชุด Radium Girls โดย Claude Estebe.

The mastermind behind Radium Girls is French artist Claude Estebe, an expert in early Japanese photography and author of several books such as “the Last geishas. Understandably Claude’s interest in japan spills over into his art and this is true of this show also. Based on the theme of the Radium Girls which was a one of the first legal cases to successfully sue an employer for knowingly allowing workers to handle deadly substances. Radium Girls were workers that painted radium onto the dials of early watches to make them glow in the dark. Radium is of course radioactive and although harmless on a single watch prolonged exposure to large amounts kills. Like the Mad Hatters before them (mercury poisoning) Radium Girls had a short life. The show explores the broad theme of deception and death from radiation. Particularly relevant in the light of current revelations of the ongoing coverups of the Fukushima disaster.

Claude’s weaves his love of Japanese culture into the exhibition of his photographicly based art works. Looking somewhat surreal the art works are super real with abstracted forms and strong colours one would not expect in a photographicly based show. In fact they could all have been paintings such is their abstraction from reality. They are extreme close ups of Japanese manga inspired toys including Godzilla, Gundams and an Astro girl like figure but have an Asian copy Barbie included that appears as an ethereal Elfen female. Macro photography with extremely narrow depth of field, black light, LEDs inserted into bellies, simple inversion and solarisation of some images, are all techniques that create the abstraction from normal photographic reality.

If the vivid colours and attention grabbing images are not enough then there is a extra dimension to the show for those curious enough to wonder at the meanings behind the names of each art work. Each name unviels an intriguing back story to each image and ties the collection together even more so than the overall theme and visual style with an underlying radiation subplot. (Hint try using the G word).

We were lucky to have a personal tour by the Artist of the residency space and see his work in progress experiments. It was a fascinating glimpse into the thought process and techniques behind the show.

Altogether Radium Girls is a Strong show for the second exhibition at the reinvented Toot Yung Gallery. And a great excuse for yet another top party in Bangkok!
