นี่คือศิลปินอีกคนหนึ่งที่ Dooddot รู้สึกตื่นเต้นมากๆ ที่ได้พูดคุย กับ Chris Levine ศิลปินระดับโลก กับชิ้นงานอันโด่งดังที่กำลังจัดแสดงในกรุงเทพ  Chris Levine  ผ่านการทำงานกับระดับโลกมากมาย อาทิ องค์ดาไล ลามะที่ 14 แห่งทิเบต, เคท มอส นางแบบชื่อดัง, เกรซ โจนส์ สุดยอดนักร้อง นักแสดงและนางแบบในยุค 80’s ทั้งนี้เขายังมีผลงานร่วมกับแบรนด์ดังต่างๆ อีกมากมาย อาทิ Swarovski, Cartier, BMW, Chanel และ Absolut Spirit

คุณใช้สื่อหลากหลาย medium คุณให้คำจำกัดความสิ่งที่คุณทำว่าอะไร ? งานภาพถ่าย ? lighting artist ?

มันยากมากๆ ครับ ที่จะจับผมลงไปในคำเล็กๆ เหมือนที่หลายๆ คนพยายามจะทำอยู่ ง่ายๆ เลยคือผมเป็นศิลปิน ที่ทำงานศิลปะและค้นหาความเป็นไปได้จากแสงและความเชื่อของมัน งานของผมจะเกี่ยวโยงกับแสงในหลายๆ ครั้ง ตั้งแต่ภาพคนที่แสงทำหน้าที่ส่งผ่านประสบการณ์บางอย่างที่เป็นรูปทรงหรือ space ที่เป็นเนื้อหาในงานครับ

You use so many materials and medium in your art , how can you describe your practice. photography ? lighting artist ? 

Its difficult to put me in a box though people try all the time.. I’m simply an artist who works and explores light as universal truth. Light is the common factor throughout my work from the portraiture to the immersive light installations – its all about the experience of light and taking the viewer to a transformative space.

ผลงานของผมบางชิ้นนั้นมันมาจากความเป็น iconic เช่น พระราชินี หรือจะเป็นทางวัฒนธรรมอย่าง Kate Moss ที่ผมนั้นพยายามที่จะเข้าไปถึงเบื้องลึกของภาพที่เราได้เห็น ที่สือสารข้อมูลทางจิตวิญญาณในขณะที่ทุกคนดูงานอยู่ ผมโชคดีมากๆครับที่ได้ทำงานร่วมกับคนเหล่านี้ ซึ่งในโชว์นี้คุณจะได้เห็น Dalai Lama หรือ พระราชินี เป็นครั้งแรกในการจัดแสดงในประเทศแถบนี้เลยครับ

Please , Tell us more about this collection that exhibited in Bangkok this time. 

Some of my work has become iconic and whether it s the Queen or the cultural icon Kate Moss, I attempt to go deeper than the visual into a more spiritual dimension of reality. I’ve been so lucky to work with such significant people of our time and in this show we celebrate some of these iconic figures such as the Dalai Lama and Her Majesty the Queen and it is the first time they have been shown in this region. 

การทำงานนั้นต่างกันอย่างไร ระหว่างทำงานกับ ‘แสง’ และทำงานกับ ‘คน’ ?

การทำงานนั้นคือการพยายามสร้างจุดเชื่อมโยงที่ลึกซึ้งระหว่าง subjects และจับความสวยงามของความเป็นมนุษย์ เหมือนกับที่ Einstein ได้เคยกล่าวไว้ เราทุกคนนั้นล้วนแต่ประกอบด้วยแสง และเมื่อผมถ่ายภาพคนนั้น ผมต้องทำงานกับแสงในตัวของแต่ละคนที่แสดงออกมา บางงานของผมนั้นเป็นงานภาพที่ abstract แต่มันคือประสบการณ์ เมื่อบุคคลนั้นเชื่อมโยงเข้ากับชิ้นงานของผม คุณจะจับได้ถึงพลังงานของแสง และเส้นทางของศิลปะที่คุณได้เจออยู่ขณะนั้น

What the different between working with ‘light’ and ‘person’? How does it work ?

I try to make a soulful connection with my subjects and capture the essence of their beauty as humans. As Einstein said we are all compressed light and so when I take a portrait I am dealing with the light of the subject which represents the truth. Some of my work is purely abstract in a visual sense and its about the experience – one becomes literally connected with the work through the sensory energy of light and our perception of the art aswe experience it.

คุณมีวิธีการทำงานต่างกันไหม กับงาน “Equanimity” “Lightness of Being”  และ  “She’s Light” ?

ผมใช้กล่องถ่ายรูปที่เคลื่อนไหวบนรางอยู่หน้า subject ในมุมต่างๆ เพื่อที่จะให้เกิดมุมมองของความเป็น 3 มิติ และชื่อของงานแต่ละชิ้นนั้นมาจากการที่ผมนั่ง สมาธิ และไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในลักษณะไหนทุกๆ งานนั้นผมตั้งใจจะสื่อถึงความงามของเสียงเงียบ ในความสงบที่มากที่สุด

The body of work in “Equanimity” “Lightness of Being”  and “She’s Light”  Did you use the same or different approach on each piece ?  / Can you explain the process of making them ?  

I use a technique that involves a camera moving along a track in front of the subject to record the different views. Its called a lenticular and its essentially a photographic process that records in 3D. The titles for all my work come to me in meditation and with all my work in whatever form, I am looking to take people closer to the beauty of stillness and into a brief but very real meditative state.

subject ที่คุณชอบที่สุดในการทำงานที่ผ่านมา ?

ทุกๆ subject นั้นต่างการแต่ก็เหมือนกันครับ ผมเรามีจิตวิญญาณของความเป็นมนุษย์ ที่เชื่อมโยงกันผ่านประสบการณ์ เช่นผมต้องตั้งสติในหลายๆ ครั้งที่ผมได้รับความไว้วางใจให้ผลิตงาน เพราะผมต้องดึงลักษณะของทุกส่วนประกอบของทุกงานออกมา และในทุกครั้งที่ผมถ่ายภาพคน ทุกคนล้วนมีความแตกต่างกันมาก แต่ความหลากหลายนั้นทำให้ผมมีจุดร่วมที่แข็งแรง มันไม่มีสูตรตายตัวในการทำงานหรอกครับ

What or who is your most favourite subject ? 

Each subject is so different but just the same. We are all spirits having a human experience and we are all connected as such. I have to pinch myself sometimes that I have been trusted to do the work.. I apply myself wholeheartedly to every piece I make and every portrait I shoot but of course each subject brings different challenges and that diversity keeps me engaged – there can be no formula to capturing the wonder of each and every person I’ve worked with from the Dalai Lama to the Queen. I try to keep it intuitive and from the heart.
