จากภาพของนักแสดงไทยใส่สูท นุ่งโจงกระเบนเดินอยู่บนพรมแดงในเทศกาลหนังเมือง Cannesที่ผ่านมา “วิทยา ปานศรีงาม” เป็นชื่อแรกที่ตอนนี้เราอยากทำความรู้จักมากที่สุด

            หลังจากนัดเวลากันเรียบร้อย เราก็ตกลงกันว่า ครั้งนี้เราจะไปสัมภาษณ์กันถึงบ้านของคุณปู (วิทยา ปานศรีงาม) พอถึงหน้าบ้านเปิดประตูออกมา เราก็พบกับผู้ชายคนนึงออกมาต้อนรับ จากภาพคนถือดาบในหนัง คราวนี้กลับกันเป็นหนังคนละม้วน ภาพที่เราเห็นวันนี้คือผู้ชายใจดีมากรอยยิ้ม ที่พอถึงห้องรับแขก เขาถามเราคำแรกว่า “มีใครดื่มกาแฟบ้างครับ พี่ปูชงกาแฟอร่อยมากนะ” ลงมือชงกาแฟร้อนๆให้เราชิมกัน จากรสชาติกาแฟที่ส่งมา มันช่วยลดคำว่า “คนแปลกหน้า” ลงทีละนิดโดยที่เราไม่รู้ตัวเลยจริงๆ ช่วงเวลานั้นเองบทสนทนาก็เริ่มขึ้น…

ตอนเด็กๆ คุณวิทยา เป็นเด็กแบบไหน?

จริงๆ ตอนเด็กพี่ก็ไม่ได้เป็นคนที่กล้าแสดงออกอะไรเท่าไรหรอกครับ แต่ถ้าให้ทำก็ทำได้นะ เมื่อก่อนตอนเรียนหนังสือ เวลาเลิกเรียนต้องออกไปร้องเพลงสูตรคูณ พี่ก็จะโดนเรียกตลอด …มันเลยเป็นเหมือนโปรแกรมนึงในตัวเรา พ่อแม่พี่เค้าก็เป็นมนุษย์เงินเดือนทำงานธรรมดาครับ คุณแม่พี่เป็น Supervisorอยู่โรงงานผลิตผงซักฟอก คุณพ่อทำงานสายบัญชี  แต่ไม่ได้อยู่ในแผนกบัญชีหรอกนะ เขาเป็นหน่วยที่ไปฉายหนังกลางแปลง แล้วก็โปรโมทผงซักฟอก พ่อพี่จะรับหน้าที่เป็นนักพากษ์หนังด้วย บางครั้งเขากลับมาบ้านจากต่างจังหวัด เขาก็จะเอาหนัง 16มม. มาเปิดให้พี่ดู

นั่นทำให้เรามีความสนใจเรื่องศิลปะ เรื่องภาพยนตร์มาตั้งแต่เด็กเลยรึเปล่า? 

ใช่ครับ สนใจเลย สนใจการวาดรูปด้วย วาดในที่นี้หมายถึงคัดลอกนะ สมัยก่อนถ้าอยากดูหนัง Animationของ Walt Disney มีฉายที่เดียวคือโรงหนัง ฮอลลีวู้ด ตรงเชิงสะพานราชเทวี คนจะไปรอดูเยอะมาก มันจะมาช่วงปิดเทอมของเด็กไทยพอดี  เขาก็จะมีโปรแกรมหนังมาขาย สมมุติเป็นเรื่อง 101 Dalmatians พี่ก็จะซื้อไว้ แล้วพอกลับมาบ้านก็เอากระดาษ  Venus มานั่งลอกเลย คือลอกตั้งแต่ตัวที่หนึ่งไปจนครบ พยายามวาด 101 ตัวเก็บรายละเอียดอะไรไปเรื่อยๆ นั่นคงทำให้เราสนใจศิลปะ ตั้งแต่ตอนนั้น

แล้วพอโตขึ้นทำไมถึงเลือกเรียนบัญชี?

ก็ตอนเรียนบัญชี ใช้คำว่าอะไรดีล่ะ… ก็อยู่ในระบบบ้านเราเหมือนกับทุกคนนั่นแหละ เอาใจพ่อแม่ เขาอยากให้เรียนบัญชีมีหน้าที่การงานอยู่ในบริษัทที่มั่นคงเหมือนพวกเขา เราก็เรียนมัธยมจบจากวัดสุทธิวราราม เรียนสายคำนวณ แต่พี่ตกเลขทุกวิชาเลย พี่รู้ตัวเองนะตอนนั้นว่าเราไม่ชอบเลย ก็ยังทะลึ่งไปเลือกเรียนบัญชีที่รามคำแหงอีก มันก็ตกอยู่ดีสิ ก็เลยมีความรู้สึกว่าตอนนั้นเรากำลังทวนน้ำมากเลย คงปีนผิดกำแพงแล้วเนี่ยเรา ถึงตอนนั้นพอดีมีน้าสาวไปอยู่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เป็นน้องของคุณแม่ เขาไปทำธุรกิจร้านอาหารไทยอยู่ New York แล้วร้านมันก็เริ่มประสบความสำเร็จในระดับหนึ่ง เขาบอกว่าอยากได้คนมาช่วย พอพี่ได้ยินก็รีบอาสาเลย

แล้วชีวิตนิวยอร์กเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง เป็นอย่างเราที่คิดเอาไว้มั้ย?

สาหัสสากรรจ์เลยครับ… เพราะเราไปแบบซื้อตั๋วเที่ยวเดียว ไม่มีเงินขนาดซื้อไป-กลับ เรียนภาษาอังกฤษอยู่ปีนึง แล้วเราก็สอบเข้าปริญญาตรีได้ พี่เลือก New York Tech (New York Institute of Technology) เพราะตอนนั้น NYU (New York University) ค่าใช้จ่ายมันสูงไป  ตอนสมัครเขาถามว่าอยากเรียนอะไร ในใจพี่ก็นึกกราฟิคดีไซน์  เพราะเราไม่ได้ชอบ Fine Artซะทีเดียว อาจารย์ก็ถามว่ามี Portfolio มั้ย เราก็ไม่รู้ว่าจะหามาจากที่ไหน  เพราะเราไม่เคยเรียนช่างศิลป์ ไม่เคยเรียนเพาะช่างมาก่อน ก็กลับไปลองทำเองเลยครับตอนนั้น ทำแบบไม่มีพื้นฐานก็จริง แต่พี่ตั้งใจมาก มีอารมณ์ร่วมไปกับงานศิลปะ พี่ว่าจุดนี้แหละเค้าถึงรับพี่ แล้วพี่ก็ได้เข้าเรียนจนได้ แม่พี่ถามทุกวันว่าลูกเรียนอะไร ตอนนั้นเราไม่กล้าบอกจริงๆ กลัวว่าบอกแล้วเขาไม่ให้อยากให้เรียน ที่สำคัญค่าเทอมเราหาเองหมดเลย อยู่ชุมชนคนไทยดีอย่างหนึ่ง คือ ช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน พอเห็นว่าเราไม่มีงานเขาก็ฝากไปร้านนั้นร้านนี้ ทุกอย่างมันเชื่อมเป็นเครือข่ายไปหมด พี่เข้างาน 4 โมงเย็นเลิกตี 2 แล้วไปเข้าเรียนตอนเช้า 7-8 โมง ทำงานสิบชั่วโมงนอนสี่ชั่วโมง ทำแบบนี้อยู่จนชิน สุดท้ายเราก็เรียนจบมาได้เกียรตินิยมอันดับ 2

อีกอย่างที่ถือว่าเป็นโชคดีเลยคือแถวที่พี่อยู่มันมี Museum อยู่ใกล้ๆ ถ้าอยากดูงานของ Van Gogh ก็ไม่ต้องเปิดดูในหนังสือ เดินเข้าไปดูของจริงๆเลย คนไทยบางคน ไปอยู่ที่นู่นเป็น 10 ปี ไม่ได้ออกจากวัฒนธรรมเดิมๆเลยก็มี ทำอะไรเดิมๆไปเล่นพนันบอล ดูเบสบอล ไปคาสิโน แต่กลับกันพี่ชอบเดินเข้า Museum พบปะผู้คน ไปเดินพวกย่าน SoHo  มันช่วยเปิดโลกทัศน์ให้เรามากเลย แล้วเวลาเราเรียนศิลปะ เราจะมีโปรเจคต์เข้ามาเรื่อยๆ สักพักพี่ก็เริ่มมีเพื่อนหลายแวดวง ทำให้พี่เชื่ออย่างนึงเลยนะว่า เมื่อประสบการณ์ชีวิตมากขึ้น เราก็กล้าที่จะออกไปเจอโลกมากขึ้นเช่นกัน พี่ว่าคนเรากลัวเพราะว่าเรารู้น้อย

แล้วคิดยังไงถึงกลับประเทศไทย?

หลังจากที่พี่แต่งงานแล้ว (แต่งงานตอนอยู่ที่อเมริกา) พี่กับแฟนพี่ก็มาเที่ยวประเทศไทยกัน บวกกับรู้มาว่า กำลังจะมีช่องทางธุรกิจชนิดหนึ่งจากอเมริกา มาเปิดที่เมืองไทย ตอนนั้นพี่เรียนจบแล้ว ธุรกิจที่ว่าเป็นแบบ Multi level marketing เป็นสินค้าขายตรงและเป็นสินค้าที่ดีกับสิ่งแวดล้อม ส่วนตัวเราก็ชอบเรื่องนี้อยู่ ก็เลยตัดสินใจกลับมาอยู่ประเทศไทย ตอนทำมันก็ประสบความสำเร็จบ้าง ไม่ประสบความสำเร็จบ้าง แรกๆมันไม่ใช่ตัวเราเลย เพราะเราทั้งคู่ก็มาแนวศิลปินกันเต็มๆ แต่พี่เชื่อเลยว่าในงานทุกงานมันต้องมีศิลปะของมันอยู่ ซึ่งศิลปะในงานขายมันคือเรื่องของ “คน” พอเรามาทำงานที่ต้องเจอกับคน เราก็ต้องศึกษาคนให้มาก สักพักเราก็เริ่มมีศิลปะการคุยกับคน ซึ่งศิลปะง่ายที่สุดก็คือ ความจริงใจ นั่นแหละ พี่ทำงานอยู่ 10 ปี ทำด้วยตัวเองทั้งหมด เรียนรู้ด้วยตัวเอง มันเลยเหมือนเป็นอีกมหาวิทยาลัยชีวิต ที่สอนอะไรหลายอย่างให้กับเรา

เข้ามาสู่การเป็นนักแสดงได้อย่างไร?

เริ่มจากพี่ไปงานปาร์ตี้นึง ไปเจอตากล้องชาว Australian ชื่อว่า Wade Muller… Wade เป็นตากล้องถ่ายทำสารคดี สมมุติว่า National Geographic, Discovery หรือ BBC มาแถบ  Asia เนี่ย ส่วนใหญ่เขาจะเป็นคนถ่ายให้ ตอนนั้นเขามีโปรเจคทำหนังสั้น ชื่อเรื่อง “Second Chance” เขาอยากให้พี่ไปเล่นเป็นตำรวจให้เขา ปรากฎว่าหนังสั้นเรื่องนี้เนี่ยประสบความสำเร็จมาก ทำให้ตอนหลังเขาก้าวเข้าไปสู่การเป็นตากล้องภาพยนตร์ใหญ่ๆได้เลย

ช่วงนั้นพอพี่เริ่มอายุ 49พี่ก็ตัดสินใจบวช พอบวชเสร็จ จำได้ว่าวันที่สึกออกมา หัวยังโล้นอยู่เลย มีโทรศัพท์โทรมา เป็น Wade เขาบอกว่าเขามาได้เป็นตากล้องหนังเรื่องนึงชื่อเรื่อง “The Prince and Me” เป็นหนังภาคต่อ ที่จะมาถ่ายในเมืองไทย พี่ก็นึกถึง Prince and Me ที่ Julia Stiles แสดงในภาคแรก แล้วภาคนี้มันขาดคาแรคเตอร์ตัวสุดท้าย ตัวที่ต้องเล่นเป็นกษัตริย์ ก็เป็นบทแรกที่พี่ไป Cast แล้วมีบทพูดจริงจัง พอไปถึงครั้งแรกพี่ทำไม่ได้เลย เพราะที่ผ่านมาแสดงเป็นตัวประกอบเลยไม่ค่อยมีบทพูด จนผู้กำกับบอกให้พี่ออกไปนั่งพักทำสมาธิก่อนสัก 20 นาที แล้วค่อยกลับมาใหม่

เพราะอะไรถึงทำไม่ได้?

เพราะเราไม่ได้ทำการบ้าน เราไม่รู้ว่าต้องทำอะไร พี่เป็นคนประเภทที่ ถ้าไม่ทำการบ้านพี่จะทำไม่ได้ แฟนพี่ยังบอกเลยว่า  “You’re the master of bullshit” คือมั่วได้เก่งมาก จากนั้นเราก็ได้ไปเล่นบทกษัตริย์โลกที่สาม จนต่อมาพี่ก็ไปรู้จักกับ Producer ของหนังเรื่องนั้นชื่อ Tom Waller

จากนั้นคุณ Tom Wallerเขาไปได้บทหนังมาเรื่องหนึ่ง เป็นงานของนักข่าวอเมริกันที่ทำงานอยู่ใน Bangkok Post  นักข่าวคนนี้กล้าเขียนมากๆ เพราะว่าอะไร เขาเป็นคนต่างชาติ เขาเข้าใจสังคมไทย เขาเขียนในสิ่งที่คนไทยไม่กล้าเขียน เกิดเป็นบทหนังเรื่อง Mindfulness and Murder เสร็จแล้วเขาก็ถามพี่ว่าสนใจอยากเล่นมั้ย พอหนังเกี่ยวกับพระ พี่บอกว่าอย่าเพิ่งยุ่งกับผมเลย ผมเพิ่งเริ่มเส้นทางของผมเอง แต่พอพี่อ่านบทเสร็จ พี่ก็ถามงั้นให้พี่ช่วยแปลบทนี้เลยมั้ย มันเป็นหนังที่น่าสนใจจริงๆ ถ้าไม่ดีก็คือเสียไปเลย ก็กลายเป็นหนังเรื่อง “ศพไม่เงียบ”  หนังเรื่องนี้ไปได้รางวัลตามเทศกาลหนังมากมาย ทำให้พี่ได้ไปทั่วเลยทีนี้ อย่างที่ Siberia ก็ได้้ไปมาแล้ว แต่พี่มีสโลแกนประจำตัวอยู่อันนึง คือ “ผมไม่ได้กะไปถึงดวงดาวหรอกนะ ผมแค่อยากจะไปปากซอยเท่านั้น แต่ถ้าเกินปากซอยไปมันเป็นผลพลอยได้ทั้งนั้น”

เข้ามาอยู่ใน Only God Forgives ได้ยังไง?

พอถึงตอนนั้น พี่ก็เริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักในระดับนึงละ เริ่มเป็นที่จดจำของ Casting Director รุ่นใหญ่ๆในเมืองไทย หนึ่งในนั้นคือพี่หนอน (Raweeporn Jungmeir) ถ้าหนังเรื่องไหนต้องมีนักแสดงไทยพี่หนอนก็จะเป็นคน Cast ให้ ตั้งแต่ The Beach, The Lady หนังใหญ่ๆพวกนี้ก็พี่หนอนหมดแหละ ตอนที่ทำศพไม่เงียบเสร็จ ก็เป็นช่วงกลางปี 2010 พอดี เขาติดต่อมาว่ามีบทภาพยนตร์เรื่องนึงจากผู้กำกับชื่อ Nicolas Winding Refn บทมัน Noir มากๆ อ่านบทแล้วเขาบอกเขานึกถึงพี่เลย บทที่ว่าก็คือเรื่อง Only God Forgives นี่ล่ะครับ พอเราทำเทปส่งไปให้เขาก็ชอบทันทีเลย

แสดงว่าหนังเรื่องนี้ถูกเขียนมาเพื่อให้ถ่ายในไทยอยู่แล้วใช่มั้ย?

ใช่ครับ ผู้กำกับ Nicolas Winding Refnเค้าเคยมาเมืองไทยมาร่วมเทศกาลหนัง Bangkok Film Festival เมื่อนานมาแล้ว ตอนนั้น Nicolas ยังเป็นผู้กำกับชาวเดนมาร์กชื่อเล็กๆคนหนึ่ง มีผลงานที่เป็นที่รู้จักคือเรื่อง Bronson แล้วก็เรื่อง Vahalla Rising ที่ได้รางวัลในประเทศอังกฤษบ้างแต่ก็ไม่ได้โด่งดังอะไร พอมากรุงเทพแล้วเขาก็รู้สึกอยากทำหนังสักเรื่องที่เกี่ยวกับประเทศไทย ก็เลยเริ่มร่างบท Only God Forgives ขึ้นมา แต่พอช่วง 2010 เขาไปทำเรื่อง Drive แล้วได้รางวัล Best Director ของ Cannes กลายเป็นอีกหนึ่งนักทำหนังที่คนทั้งโลกเริ่มจับตามอง โปรเจค Only God Forgives ที่เคยคิดไว้มันก็เลยถูกหยุดไว้ก่อน ในช่วงเวลาระหว่างนั้นหนัง Only God Forgivesมันเลยเปลี่ยนโฉมจากหนังโนเนมเล็กๆเรื่องนึง กลายเป็นหนังของผู้กำกับรางวัลระดับโลก และนักแสดงนำก็เปลี่ยนมาเป็นดาราชื่อดังอย่าง Ryan Gosling เลย

จนสองปีผ่านไปNicolas เขาบินมาเมืองไทยแล้วเรียกพี่ไปคุยอีกครั้ง พี่ก็เตรียมท่องบทเลย พอไปถึงแทนที่จะให้เล่นให้ดู เขากลับถามพี่ว่า “คุณคิดยังไงกับการคอรัปชั่นในประเทศคุณ” ตอนนั้นพี่มีสองคำตอบ แต่คำตอบที่อยากจะตอบนี่ไม่ได้ตอบไปหรอกนะ

อยากจะตอบว่าอะไร?

“คุณจะให้ผมเท่าไรเพื่อจะตอบคำถามนี้” (ขำ) แต่ในใจกลัวไปกวนเขามาก เดี๋ยวเขาไม่จ้าง

แล้วคำตอบที่ตอบไปตอบว่า?

พี่ตอบว่า “It’s here.” (ยิ้ม) “And you have to accept it, it’s a part of our society.” พี่พูดไปแบบนี้เลย… เป็นตัวของตัวเอง พอคุยเสร็จเย็นวันนั้นเขาโทรหาผู้ช่วย Casting Director บอกว่าเขาชอบพี่มาก เวลามองพี่เค้าบอกว่ามันเป็นสิ่งที่เค้าไม่ได้มองหา Character นี้มาก่อน เขาให้สัมภาษณ์พี่ไปเจอภายหลังว่า การหา Character ตัวนี้ มันก็เหมือนการหาเข็มในกองฟางนั่นล่ะ เพราะว่าทุกอย่างในตัวพี่ มันไม่ใช่สิ่งที่คิดไว้ก่อนหน้านั้นเลย พี่มีอะไรในตัวพี่ไม่รู้ที่เขาชอบมาก  ติดอย่างเดียวเขาบอกพี่ตัวใหญ่เกินไป คำเดียวเท่านั้นล่ะวันรุ่งขึ้นพี่เข้าโรงยิมเลย ทั้งๆที่ตอนนั้นยังไม่ได้เซ็นสัญญากันเลยนะ ในวงการภาพยนตร์คุณจะบอกว่าผมเล่นอะไรก็แล้วแต่ ถ้ายังไม่เซ็นสัญญาก็ถือว่ายังไม่ได้เล่น เก้าเดือนผ่านไปพี่ลดไปเกือบ 20 กิโล จนเขากลับมาเตรียมทำ Pre-Production พี่ก็ทำเทปตัวอย่างอีกรอบ แล้วเทปแรกกับเทปสองมันต่างกันฟ้ากับดินเลย เทปสองเขาบอกว่า ต้องการให้พี่ทำตัวเหมือนอนุเสาวรีย์ให้มากที่สุด เขาพูดเท่านี้

แล้วเทปแรกกับเทปที่สอง มันมีความแตกต่างกันอย่างไร?

เทปแรกมันเหมือนเป็น มาเฟียตำรวจทั่วๆไป  แต่อันที่สองเนี่ย พี่ใช้ความเป็นเคนโด้ลงไปเลย เพราะพี่ก็เป็นนักกีฬาเคนโด้… เคนโด้มันคือความนิ่ง นิ่งแล้วระเบิด เทปที่สองก็เลยเหมือนกับที่เราเห็นกันในหนัง การแอคติ้งทุกอย่าง แสดงออกจากข้างในหมดเลย

ทั้งสองเทปนี่ระยะเวลาห่างกันเท่าไร?

เกือบปีครับ

กลัวมั้ยครับ ที่ไม่ได้เล่น เพราะว่าหนังอาจจะโดน hold ไว้ และมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงมากมาย?

กลัวครับ แน่นอนว่ามันต้องเป็นความสูญเสียอยู่แล้วล่ะ แต่ของแบบนี้มันเป็นเรื่องของวันพรุ่งนี้อยู่แล้ว เราไม่สามารถรู้ได้ พี่ไปเล่นหนังเรื่องไหนก็ตาม จะค่าตัวเป็นหมื่นเป็นแสน ถึงเรื่องไหนให้พี่พันเดียวพี่ก็เล่นเท่ากับพี่เล่นแสนนึงนั่นละ เวลาทำอะไรพี่ตั้งใจทำมันทุกครั้ง ตอนนั้นน่ะในใจพี่คิดตลอดว่า “เล่นกับใครไม่เล่น มาเล่นกับปู (กู)” พี่เป็นคนชอบความท้าทายอะ พี่คิดเสมอว่าไม่ต้อง Why me? แต่ให้เปลี่ยนเป็น Try me! แบบเข้ามาลองกับฉันสิ จนสุดท้ายเขาให้คำตอบ เขาตัดสินใจว่าเป็นพี่จริงๆ

กดดันไหมที่ได้ร่วมงานกับ  Ryan Gosling และ Nicolas Winding Refn เพราะว่าทั้งสองคนถือว่ามีชื่อเสียงมากๆในตอนนี้?

เวลาพี่ไปแข่งเคนโด้นะ ตอนนั้นรอบแรกพี่เคยเจอแชมป์เก่า พี่คิดในใจว่า ก็ให้เราตายเพราะแชมป์เก่าไปเลยสิ มันไม่มีอะไรจะเสียอยู่แล้วนี่  ถ้าเราตั้งใจทำงานดีๆซะอย่าง ไม่ว่าบทน้อยหรือเยอะพี่จะตั้งใจเล่นเต็มที่ทุกครั้ง คนจะ Respect เรา เมื่อเขารู้ว่าเรามีความตั้งใจ และเราทำจริงๆ แต่ถ้าคุณมั่วไป คุณไม่ทำการบ้านไป คุณไม่ตั้งใจ คุณไม่เป็น Professional เมื่อไร นั่นล่ะคุณสมควรที่จะโดนด่าโดนตำหนิละ เพราะหลังจากที่ Nicolas เขาไปได้รางวัลจากเรื่อง Drive ที่ Cannes มา ทีนี้คนก็เริ่มคาดหวังกันเยอะ มันเลยเกิดความคิดเห็นเสียงแตกของหนังเรื่องนี้ ที่มีทั้งคนด่าคนชอบ บางคนคิดว่ามันต้องเป็น Drive ภาคสอง เป็นหนัง Action Romantic มีตัวละคร Superhero ตัวนึง ซึ่งเรื่องนี้ก็มีนะแต่ไม่ใช่ Ryan Gosling ไง กลับกลายเป็นไอ้ผู้ชายวัยกลางคนคนนึง ใครก็ไม่รู้ที่ไม่มีใครรู้จัก ทำให้หนังเกิดความน่าค้นหาขึ้นมา สุดท้ายกลายเป็นว่าหนังเรื่องนี้จริงๆแล้วมันคือเรื่องของตัวละครที่ชื่อ “ช้าง”

แสดงว่าไอเดียหลัก ของการทำงานกับ Hollywood ก็คือ ทุกคนมีความเป็น Professional มาก?

ตั้งใจครับ ตั้งใจมาก ทุกคนเลย ตั้งแต่ตัวผู้กำกับเลย คือ Nicolas เป็นคนทำหนังที่ถ้า 10 ถึง 15 เทค นี่ถือว่าน้อยมาก สามสิบเทคยังมีครับหนังเรื่องนี้ ฉากที่อาเมา (โกวิท วัฒนกุล) เดินขึ้นบันไดโรงแรมถ่ายกันไป 30 เทค หนังใช้จริงๆไม่ถึง 3วินาที คำพูดติดปากของเขาคือ “It’s Perfect but let’s do it again”  พี่ว่าอันนี้สำคัญนะ คือเมื่อไหร่ที่คุณยังไม่พอใจเนี่ย คุณยังมีโอกาสเลือกได้อีกมากมาย และอย่างที่บอกคือทุกคนตั้งใจจริงๆ อย่างในบางฉากอย่างที่พี่ต้องเอากระทะทุบคุณสายเชีย (สายเชีย วงศ์วิโรจน์ “จนเครียดกินเหล้า”)จริงๆถ้ากล้องถ่ายกันต่อนี่คือพี่กระทืบเขาต่อเลย เพราะคุณสายเชียเขาจะบอกพี่ก่อนถ่ายตลอดว่า “คุณปูทำให้เต็มที่เลยนะ เพราะถ้าเราทำไม่ดี เราก็ต้องถ่ายหลายเทค” ทำให้เรารู้เลยว่าโอ้โห แต่ละคนในกองนี้ที่เค้าทำงานกันเนี่ย เค้าต้องการความสมบูรณ์แบบ เค้าต้องการความเพอร์เฟคที่สุดให้กับหนังจริงๆ

แล้วพี่ปู คิดยังไงกับ ตัวละครที่ชื่อว่า “ช้าง” ใน Only God Forgives?

คือ พี่ถามตัวเองเยอะมากเลย ในหนังทุกเรื่องเวลาพี่ได้บท พี่จะต้องตีความหมายของคาแรคเตอร์ให้ออก พี่จะทำ Character Study เยอะมาก บทของ ”ช้าง” ก็เหมือนกัน เมื่อคุณเป็นพระเจ้าแล้ว คุณเป็นเทพแล้ว คุณมีอำนาจสูงสุดแล้ว คุณจะต้อง… เป็นคนที่มีความรับผิดชอบ ต้องมีความนิ่ง ทุกอย่างที่ทำไปไม่ใช่อารมณ์ ไม่ใช่ความโกรธ ไม่ใช่ความริษยา ไม่ใช่ความรังเกลียด  คุณทำเพราะความเมตตา ทำเพราะว่ามันเป็นสิ่งที่คุณต้องตัดสิน อันนี้คือสิ่งที่พี่สื่อออกมา เพราะฉะนั้นเรื่องนี้คุณต้องเข้าใจว่า ช้างเนี่ยไม่ใช่คนปกติ บางคนดูแล้วก็จะบอกว่า ทำไมมันเดินเหมือนหุ่นยนต์เลย ใช่แล้วมันคือหุ่นยนต์ ถ้าคิดว่าวิทยาเล่นแข็งเป็นหิน ใช่แล้ว เพราะผู้กำกับก็บอกพี่ตลอดว่า คุณต้องเป็นเหมือนอนุเสาวรีย์ เป็นสิ่งที่คนยกมือเคารพ ยกมือไหว้ คือเหมือนรูปปั้นเดินได้อะครับ คุณจะธรรมดา ก็ต่อเมื่อคุณกลับเข้าไปใน Karaoke แล้วคุณไปชำระล้างตัวเอง เมื่อร้องเพลงเสร็จ กลับบ้านไปหาลูกสาว นั่นล่ะคุณถึงเป็นคนบริสุทธิ์

ขนลุกเลย… เพราะว่าหลายคน ก็จะมีคำถามกันมาก ว่าฉาก Karaoke คืออะไร?

ฉากKaraoke คือเหมือนเป็น ฉากการชำระล้างบาป และสำหรับพี่เอง พี่คิดว่า เป็นการส่งวิญญาณให้คนที่ฆ่า มันมีอยู่ฉากนึงที่พี่ร้องเพลงแล้วร้องไห้ด้วย นั่นพี่ร้องออกมาเองเลยนะ ไม่ได้มีบอกว่าฉากนี้ตัวละครนี้ต้องร้องไห้ จะเล่นกี่เทค พี่ก็ร้องไห้ ไม่รู้ทำไม พี่ก็เลยตีโจทย์ว่าฉาก Karaoke คือการส่งวิญญาณ คือการชำระล้าง คือการออกทรง ออกร่าง ของเทพพระเจ้า

“ช้าง” เป็นตัวละครที่เราชอบมากที่สุดรึเปล่าครับ ที่เราเคยเล่นมา?

จริงๆบทหลวงพ่ออนันดาในศพไม่เงียบ ก็ชอบนะครับ  แต่ต้องยอมรับว่า หนังเรื่องนี้ชอบที่สุด เพราะพี่ไม่ได้ชอบแค่ตัวละครที่พี่เล่นตัวนี้ตัวเดียว พี่ชอบ “Julian” (ตัวละครของ Ryan Gosling) มาก เพราะเวลาดูฉากที่ Julian คุยกับแม่ หลังจากโดน “ช้าง” อัดจนเละเนี่ย เขานั่งมุมห้องเหมือนเขากลับไปเป็นเด็กทารกอีกครั้ง สิ่งที่เขาพยายามพิสูจน์ตัวเองทั้งหมด มันจบลงหมดแล้ว หรือตัวละครแม่ (ของ Kristin Scott Thomas) พี่ก็ชอบ ตั้งแต่ฉากที่แม่ลูบไล้แขนลูกตัวเองเนี่ย มันเห็นถึงความปรารถนาของมัน ของผู้หญิงที่มันโรคจิตเสียสติ มันมีความปรารถนาที่จะร่วมเพศกับลูกชายมันเองอะ แล้วอันนี้มันเป็นปมที่เป็นปัญหามากเลย  สรุปคือพี่ชอบตัวละครในหนังเรื่องนี้ทุกตัวเลย

พอหนังเรื่องนี้ได้ไป Cannes แล้วเราได้รับเสียงปรบมือ Standing Ovation (การยืนปรบมือให้เกียรติ) ด้วย รู้สึกอย่างไร?

นั่นก็ไม่คาดฝันเหมือนกันครับ ตอนนั้นเขาใช้เวลา 5 นาทีในการยืนปรบมือให้เราเลยนะ สำหรับเรื่องปรบมือนี่พี่รู้สึกขอบคุณมากกว่า  พี่รู้สึกขอบคุณจริงๆ ขอบคุณที่เห็น คำว่าขอบคุณที่เห็นเนี่ย มันสำคัญมากเลยนะ เพราะไม่ว่าคุณจะทำอะไรก็ตาม ถ้าคนไม่เห็นสิ่งที่คุณทำเนี่ย สิ่งที่คุณทำลงไปหรือความทุ่มเทของคุณมันจะดูไร้ค่ามากเลย การปรบมือนี้มันเลยเหมือนกับ เค้าเห็นสิ่งที่คุณทำ เค้าเห็นคุณค่าของเรา

ทีนี้จากความสำเร็จของ Only God Forgives เราทราบว่าจะมี Project ต่อไปกับ Mr. Tom Waller?

จากความสำเร็จ…ก็มีคนติดต่อเข้ามาเยอะขึ้นนะครับ ส่วนโปรเจคต์ที่ว่าเป็นหนังเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของเพชรฆาตคนสุดท้ายที่เรือนจำบางขวางครับ หนังน่าจะออกมาให้ดูกัน ถ้าไม่ใช่ต้นปีหน้า ก็ต้องเป็นอีกต้นปีนึงเลย เพราะเรามองทางเรื่องของเทศกาลหนังเป็นเป้าหมายหลักมากกว่า ใจพี่มีความใฝ่ฝันอยู่หลายที่ แต่มันก็ไม่ใช่เรื่องง่าย การที่หนังสักเรื่องจะไปอยู่ในเทศกาลไหนสักงาน  ที่เรามองว่าอยากให้ไปอยู่ในเทศกาลหนัง  เพราะว่าการที่หนังมันไปอยู่ในเทศกาล มันเป็นการบ่งบอกว่าหนังเรื่องนั้นเป็นหนังประเภทไหน และให้อะไรกับคนดูบ้างครับ

นี่คือความฝันต่อไปใช่ไหม?

ใช่ครับ คือได้ไปฉายในเทศกาลใหญ่ๆ เพราะความฝันของพี่ไม่มีอะไรมากครับ จะทำอะไรพี่ขอให้มันมีคำว่าไทยอยู่ในนั้นอะพี่ก็พอใจแล้ว อย่างตอนนี้ไปไหนเขาก็เรียก Thai Actor แค่นั้นก็พอละ พี่จะไม่ท้อถอยกับคำสบประมาทใดๆทั้งนั้น ซึ่งถามว่ามีมั้ย? มีเยอะแยะเลยครับ คำว่าคนนี้เล่นหนังไม่มีออร่าเลย มาเล่นหนังทำไมเนี่ย พี่ก็บอกว่า โอเคไม่เป็นไร เดี๋ยวคุณดูปีหน้าว่าอะไรเกิดขึ้นจากหนังเรื่องนี้แล้วค่อยว่ากัน

กลับมาที่ชีวิตส่วนตัวนิดนึงครับ ตอนนี้ทำอะไรอยู่นอกจากเป็นนักแสดง?

ก็บริหารโรงเรียนบัลเลต์ของภรรยา แล้วก็เป็นประธานเคนโด้ ที่ได้เป็นประธานชมรมนี่อาจจะเพราะพี่แก่ที่สุดในนั้นมั้งครับ น้องๆก็เลยให้ความเคารพรัก เป็นงานที่ไม่ได้ทำเป็นอาชีพ แต่เป็นเหมือนกิจกรรมสังคมมากกว่า แล้วตอนนี้พี่ปูกับภรรยา ก็กำลังเป็นกรรมการบริหารของ มูลนิธิช่วยชีวิตสัตว์ป่าแห่งประเทศไทย เป็นมูลนิธิที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการช่วยเหลือสัตว์ที่ถูกเอามาจากป่า ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการถูกทรมานหรืออะไรก็แล้วแต่ กำลังมีแผนการที่จะทำอะไรอีกเยอะมากเลยครับ

ตอนนี้เราถือว่าสำเร็จรึยังในสายอาชีพนี้?

พี่มีพี่ที่รักท่านหนึ่ง ที่พี่เคยร่วมงานด้วย คือ คุณสุรินทร์ สนธิระติ เขาเขียนหนังสือมาเล่มนึง คติพจน์ของเขาซึ่งพี่ก็เก็บเอามาใช้ด้วยเหมือนกันคือ  “งานที่ดีที่สุด คืองานชิ้นต่อไปที่คุณทำ” เพราะฉะนั้นเมื่อเราเซ็นชื่อจบงาน คือมันจบไปละ “It’s done” มันเสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้ว เราไม่ต้องคิดถึงมันละ (ยิ้ม) คิดถึงชิ้นใหม่แล้วทำให้ดีที่สุด  ที่ผ่านไปสำเร็จไม่สำเร็จนั้น It’s done.

คำถามสุดท้าย ถ้าให้จำกัดความ คำว่า ปู วิทยา ปานศรีงาม อะไรคือสิ่งที่จะบ่งบอกตัวเรา?

(ขำก่อนเลย) ถ้าเป็นบนหลุมศพของพี่นะ มันก็ต้องเขียนเอาไว้ว่า “ผู้ชายที่ชอบเพลง Imagine เป็นที่สุด” (ยิ้ม) คือพี่ชอบเพลงนี้มากเลย พี่ว่าทุกอย่างเนี่ย ทุกอย่างที่เป็นคำตอบมันอยู่ในเพลงนี้หมดละ พี่คิดว่าถึงแม้ว่า John Lennon ได้ตายไปนานแล้วก็จริง แต่ที่ Strawberry Fields (ลานที่ระลึกการตายของ John Lennon ตั้งอยู่ที่สวนสาธารณะ Central Park ใน New York) ทุกวันนี้ก็ยังมีคนไปหาไปเยี่ยมเยียนเค้าตลอด มันแสดงถึงว่ามีการจดจำ ยึดถือ สิ่งที่เค้าสร้างขึ้นมา พี่ก็ยังไม่รู้ว่าต่อไปอะไรจะเกิดขึ้นกับชีวิตพี่ เพราะพี่ถือว่า ตรงนี้มันเป็นแค่ช่วงเริ่มต้นของชีวิตพี่เหมือนกัน เพียงแต่พี่มาเริ่มตอนอายุ 50 เท่านั้นเอง พี่อยากให้ทุกคนรู้ว่า ไม่เคยมีคำว่าสายเกินไป ที่เราจะเริ่มทำอะไรสักอย่าง นั่นละถ้าบนหลุมศพของพี่เขียนเอาไว้ว่า “ผู้ชายที่ชอบเพลง Imagine และรักการทำกับข้าวมากที่สุด” พี่ก็พอใจละ…

         …หลังจากที่เราพูดคุยกันกับพี่ปูเสร็จเรียบร้อย ก็ไม่แปลกใจเลยว่าทำไมเวลาเราเห็นเขาโลดแล่นอยู่บนแผ่นฟิล์ม แล้วเรารับได้ถึงพลังที่เขาส่งออกมาขนาดนั้น ทั้งกิริยาท่าทาง ความคิด การพูด การวางตัว ทุกอย่างที่เป็นเขามันทำให้เรารู้สึกได้เลยว่าผู้ชายคนนี้ “ของจริง” นับเป็นอีกหนึ่งคนเก่งของเมืองไทยที่โลกจะต้องจดจำชื่อเขาเอาไว้อย่างแน่นอนกับ “วิทยา ปานศรีงาม”

Imagine, a Thai actor wearing a contemporary take on a traditional Thai jong-kra-bane with a suit walking on the prestigious red carpet in Cannes, it is inevitable that “Vithaya Pansringarm” is the person we want to meet the most. 

We made contact and agreed to have the interview at his house. Once we have arrived at the gate, we saw a man coming to greet us. There was so much contrast between the image of a man holding a sword as his weapon in Only God Forgives and the man standing before us. What we saw was a man full of smiles whose first words when we arrived in his living room were, “who wants to have some coffee? I’m quite good at making it”. From the smell and taste of the coffee that has erased the barriers between us, not long after that the interview has commenced.

How would you describe yourself when you were a kid?

Actually, when I was a kid I wasn’t really that outspoken or anything. But if I had to be, I could. I was always picked to sing the multiplication song after school, so it’s like I’m programmed to be able to do it. My parents were normal middle-class people. My mother was a supervisor at a washing detergent production factory. My father worked in the financial fields, but technically he didn’t work in the financial division. Strangely he worked in the outdoor cinema unit where he tried to promote the washing detergents. He was also responsible for being the voice actor, and sometimes he would come home with a 16mm film for me to watch.

So you have had interests in the arts and cinema since you were a kid?

Yes, I was very interested. I was also interested in drawing, drawing in this term means copy and tracing. Back in the day, if you want to watch an animated film from Walt Disney, it was shown in only one cinema called the Hollywood Cinema, near the Ratchathewi Bridge. Tons of people always wait to watch the film there, since it was shown during the summer holidays for Thai students. If it was the 101 Dalmatians, I would come home and copy and trace the picture with the Venus paper (tracing paper). I would copy from the first Dalmatians and try to draw until I reached 101, getting the little details down. Perhaps that’s what makes me interested in art.

We heard that at the time, you studied accounting for a little while. Why did you quit?

Because I was under the family rules just like any other traditional Thai families. I wanted to please my parents. They wanted me to study accounting so I could have a bright, stable future in my career like them. I majored in mathematics when I was in high school at Wat Suthiwararam, but I constantly failed in math. I knew myself that I didn’t like math at all, but I still applied for finance major when I went to Ramkhamhaeng University, and of course I still failed! So I felt I was fighting for a lost cause. At the time, my aunt ran a Thai restaurant in New York. It was becoming successful, and she wanted more people to help, so I quickly volunteered.

How was life in New York? Was it like you imagined?

It was extremely tough, because I didn’t have that much money to buy a return ticket, so I only had a one-way plane ticket. I studied English for about a year, and then applied for a Bachelor’s degree at New York Tech, because NYU was too expensive. When I applied, they asked what I wanted to study, so I thought to myself that I wanted to study graphic design, since I wasn’t that into Fine Arts. They continued to ask whether I had a portfolio, and I didn’t have one since I never studied art before. So I decided to go back and create my own art pieces. It’s true that I didn’t have any artistic background, but I was very focused and into my art at the time. Later, I got in. My mother asked me everyday what I was studying, but I didn’t dare tell her because I was afraid that she wouldn’t let me study art. Most importantly, I paid for all my school fees. What’s good about being in a Thai community is that we’re always helping each other. When someone knows that I didn’t have a job, they would take me to different restaurants to apply for jobs, so connections were important. I would start work at 4pm and get off work at 2am. After that I go to my classes around 7-8am. I worked around 10 hours and slept 4 hours until it became my daily routine. In the end, I managed to graduate with second class honors.

I was also lucky that around the place where I worked, there were a lot of museums near by. So if I wanted to see Van Gogh’s artwork, I didn’t have to keep looking them in books, because I could easily go see the real thing! Some Thai people have lived there for 10 years but didn’t manage to break out of the Thai culture of gambling on football,  baseball and going to casinos, you name it. But I liked to go to museums, meet new people, hang around in Soho. It really helped open my eyes, and when I studied art I would have projects, and eventually get to have new friends from different circles. From this experience, it made me believe in one thing. When we have a lot of life experiences, we will have more courage to step out in the real world, while some people are scared because they have little knowledge and experiences.

So what made you decide to come back to Thailand?

After I got married, my wife and I came to visit Thailand, and we found out that there was an American company planning to open here. They were a multi-level marketing company that sold a variety of products that has the policy to benefit the environment. I had already graduated and personally, I really liked the idea, so I decided to settle in Thailand. When I first started the job, it wasn’t always successful, and I felt that it wasn’t who I am, because I considered myself as a bit of an artist. I truly believe that every job has its own artistry. The artistry in making sales is to understand ‘people’. So when I was in a job where I had to constantly meet new people, I also had to study a lot about them. Eventually, I knew the art of talking to people, and this kind of art is very easy when you have sincerity. I worked there for 10 years, learnt and did everything by myself, so it was like the university of life that has taught me so many valuable experiences.

So how did you get into acting?

It started when I went to a party and met an Australian photographer named Wade Muller. Wade was a cameraman who filmed a lot of documentaries, from National Geographic, Discovery, BBC, particularly in Asia. But at the time he wanted a change so he was thinking of making a short film called “Second Chance”. He wanted me to act as a policeman. Turns out that this short film helped him become a cameraman in the film industry.

I was turning 49 at the time, and I decided to become a monk. However, on the day that I left monkhood, my head was still bald, I got a phone call from Wade. He told me that he was a cinematographer for the film “Prince and Me”, it’s a sequel, filmed in Thailand. So I thought back to the first film with Julia Stiles. At the time the crew were trying to find an actor to play one last character, which was the king. That was my first cast with serious dialogues. When I first got to the set I couldn’t act at all, until the director himself came up to me and said that I should have 20 minutes alone with my script, then come back once I am ready.

Why couldn’t you act at first?

Because I didn’t do my homework, I didn’t know what I had to do. I’m the kind of person that if I haven’t done my homework, I will not be able to do it. My wife once told me that “you’re the master of bullshit” because I’m so good at making my own improvisations. So afterwards, I acted out my part as the king of a third-world country. Then later on, I got to know a film producer named Tom Waller.

At the time, Tom just got a script to film. The script belongs to an American journalist who works for the Bangkok Post. The film is called “Mindfulness and Murder”, which this American journalist had the guts to write about. Why? Because he is a foreigner living in Thailand, he understands Thai society, and he dares to write on a subject that most Thais wouldn’t dare write about. So he asked me whether I’m interested to play the character of a monk. Since the film is about monks, I said don’t make me get involved with this, I’ve just started in this field. But when I got to read the script, I asked if I could help translate it into Thai. It’s a very interesting ‘make or break’ film. This film got many awards at many film festivals, and I even got to go to Siberia. I have my own slogan that says, “I don’t want to reach the stars, I just want to reach on the street. If I’ve come further than the street, then it means that we achieved the by-product.”

And how did you finally get involved in Only God Forgives?

It was around mid-2010. By that time I have gained a bit more recognition, and the casting directors started to remember who I was. One of Thailand’s casting directors named Raweeporn Jungmeir, who was the casting director for The Beach, The Lady, and other big hollywood movies filmed in Thailand, contacted me about this film script that will be direct by Nicolas Winding Refn. The script is very dark, she said once she read the script she thought of me right away. This script is Only God Forgives. When I submitted my casting tape, Nicolas liked it right away.

This means that the film was intentionally written to be filmed in Thailand?

Correct. Nicolas has visited Thailand before to attend the Bangkok Film Festival a long time ago. Back then, he was just another Danish director who hasn’t made a name for himself yet. A few of his earlier films include Bronson and Vahalia Rising that got a few awards in the UK but weren’t really his breakthrough. When he came to Thailand, he felt that he wanted to make a film related to our context, so he started to write the script of Only God Forgives. But when he made Drive in 2010, and won Best Director at Cannes,  he suddenly became one of the breakthrough directors to watch. Thus, the project for Only God Forgives had to be on hold. During that time, from a no-name film, it was inevitable for Only God Forgives to become a film directed by world renowned director. As for the main lead the previous actor dropped out, and film got Ryan Gosling instead.

Two years have passed, Nicolas flew back to Thailand and called me back to talk. I made good preparations by memorizing my script. Instead of wanting me to act out my part, he asked me, “what do you think about corruption in your country?” I had two answers at the time, but I didn’t give the answer I wanted to say.

What did you want to reply?

“How much will you pay me if I answered this question?” (laugh) but I didn’t want to be an ass, or else he might not hire me.

So what did you reply instead?

I said, “it’s here, (smile) and you have to accept it, it’s part of our society.” So when we finished talking, he called the casting director to say that he really liked me. When he looked at me he said he wasn’t looking for this character in the first place. Later on he always mentioned that this character is like finding a needle in a hay stack, and everything about me wasn’t what he expected to find. There was something about me that he really liked, the only problem, though, I was too big. So the next day I went to the gym, even though I haven’t yet signed the contract. In the film industry, you can say that you’re in a film only once you signed the contract. Nine months passed, I lost 20 kilograms, and they were ready for pre-production. I made my casting tapes again. These two tapes had so much differences to each other. For my second tape, Nicolas said he wanted me to act like a walking monument as much as possible. That was all he said.

What are the differences between the two tapes?

The first tape was like a normal mafia police in general, but in the second one I used stillness…stillness and then explosion, which is the characteristic of kendo, because I’m a kendo athlete. So the second tape is like what you see in the film; the acting, everything comes from within.

What are the time differences between the two tapes?

Almost a year

Were you scared that you might not get the part, because the film was put on hold, and many things have changed?

Yes I was scared, of course it would be my loss, but it also depends on tomorrow. We cannot foresee the future. Which ever film I’m in, no matter how much I get paid, even if I get paid only a 1,000 baht ($31), I would still give my all. When I’m doing something, I will always be focused and give it my all. I like to be challenged. I don’t think ‘why me?’ but change it to ‘try me!’ So in the end they gave me the answer, and I really got to play the part.

Did you feel the pressure from having to work with Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn, because both of them are very well known?

When I was in a kendo competition, the first round I met with the champ, and I thought, so let me die because of the champ…because I’ve got nothing left to lose if I am well prepared. People will respect you when they know that you are well prepared to do something. But if you haven’t done your homework, you’re not focused, you’re not a professional enough, then you deserve to be looked down upon. Because after Nicolas won an award at Cannes, people have a lot of expectations, thus having a lot of comments and opinions on this film. Some people thought that it must be Drive Part 2, a romantic action film with a superhero, which was also contained in this film, but it’s just not Ryan Gosling. Instead you get a middle-aged man whom no one knows, which makes the film even more intriguing. Actually this film is about the character called “Chang”.

This means that the whole idea in working with a Hollywood team is that everyone is very professional?

Yes, everyone is very focused. Nicolas is the kind of director that with 10-15 takes is considered to be very few. Sometimes it was up to 30 takes for some scenes, like the scene where Ah Mao is walking up the stairs. That was done in 30 takes but was actually used for 3 seconds. Nicolas liked to say, “it’s perfect but let’s do it again” which I think is important. Because when you’re not satisfied with something, you still have many options to change and fix things. There was one scene where I had to hit one of my co-stars with a frying pan and kick him as well. The next day he had to go to the hospital because his ribs were in bad shape, but on set he still said to me, “give it your all, because if you don’t, then we will have to do a lot of takes”. This made me go, wow…everyone on this set wants everything about the film to be perfect.

And what do you think of the character “Chang” in Only God Forgives?

I used to ask a lot of questions to myself. In every film that I’m in, I have to always define who these characters are. I would do a lot of character studies, including “Chang”. Once you are god, you have the highest power. You must have a lot of responsibilities, stillness, everything you do doesn’t come from your emotions, not from anger, not from jealousy, not from hate, but you’ve done it out of mercy, you’ve done it because you have to judge. These are the things that I try to convey through Chang. Therefore, you have to understand that Chang is not just an ordinary person. There were some criticisms that asked why does he walk like a robot? If you think Vithaya acts like a rock, then yes, because the director told me all the time that I have to act as a figure that people respect. You will be normal again once you go back to singing karaoke, and you have purified yourself. Once you finished singing and go back home to your daughter, then that is when you are pure.

Wow…because everybody asked a lot about what the karaoke scene meant

The karaoke scene is like purifying all the sins, and for me, I think it also means sending the spirits of the people he killed. There was one scene where I also cried, I really did cry then, even though I wasn’t supposed to cry. No matter how many takes, I would cry…I don’t know why. So that is why this scene for me means sending the spirits away, and purifying oneself.

Is “Chang” your most favorite character out of all the films you played?

Actually I also like the monk character in Mindfulness and Murder, but I have to say that I like this film the most, because I don’t just like the character I played, I also really like Julian (Ryan Gosling’s character) because when you watch Julian talking to his mother after he lost the fight to Chang, he sat in a corner of the room like a baby, all his egos and everything about himself has been proven. Or even the mother (Kristin Scott Thomas’s character), her I also like a lot, from the scene where she slowly traces her finger on her son’s arm, it shows the desire of a psychotic woman. There’s a sexual desire towards her own son, which is a really sick. So as a result, I like all the characters in this film.

This film has made its way into Cannes, and you also got a standing ovation. How did you feel at the time?

I’ve never expected that. They clapped for 5 whole minutes. About this honor, I felt more like wanting to thank you. I wanted to really thank you for seeing. Seeing in this case is really important. Because no matter what you’ve done, if no one sees it, all the time and energy you’ve spent will have no value. So I felt appreciated for being recognized.

From the success of Only God Forgives, we heard that you’re having a project with Tom Waller. Can you please tell us a bit about it?

I’ve got a lot of contacts from the success of this film. As for the project you mentioned it’s a film about the life of The Last Executioner at Bang Kwang prison. The film should be released early next year, if not, then the following of another year, because we are focused on the film festivals as the main aim of this film. I have a lot of hopes and dreams about the film, but I know it’s not easy for a film to be able to get into a film festival. The reason I’m focused on film festivals is because then the film can be defined as to what the type of film it is and what can it give to the audience.

So this is your next dream?

Yes, for the film to be shown at big festivals. In everything I do, I just want to have the word ‘Thai’ in it that’s all, like nowadays everywhere I go I would be called a ‘Thai actor’. I would not be defeated by any criticisms, which there are a lot if you ask me. Such as this guy has no aura whatsoever, how can he be in this film, etc, and I’ll say, it’s okay, next year you’ll see what’s coming up next after this film.

Back to your personal life a bit, what are you up to nowadays besides acting?

Running the ballet school with my wife, and also I’m the president of kendo’s association. Maybe I got to be the president because I’m the oldest and get a lot of respect from the people. It is not a permanent job, more like an activity. Also right now my wife and I are the directors of The Wild Life Rescue Foundation of Thailand, which is devoted in helping wild animals from getting tortured, etc. We are having many plans for future projects at the moment.

Do you consider yourself to be successful with this acting field?

I have a dear friend of mine whom I have great respect for, his name is Surin Sontirati. He wrote a book that contains a motto that says, “your greatest work will be your next work to come” therefore once the work is done, it’s done. We don’t have to think back to it again (smile) think of your new work and do the best with it.

Our last question, if you can define into words who is “Vithaya Pansringarm”, what will it be?

(laugh) If it’s on my gravestone, it has to be “a man who loves the song ‘Imagine’ very much” I really like this song, everything that you wanted to be answered are within this song. I think that even if John Lennon died a long time ago, his Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park will always be visited by people. It shows that he is remembered for what he has created. I still don’t know what will happen with my life from now on, because right now it’s also just the beginning of a part of my life, even though it started for me at the age of 50. I want everyone to know that it’s not too late to start doing something in life. So yes, if on my gravestone it says “ a man who loves the song ‘Imagine’ and cooking the most”, then I would already happy.

After our interview has finished, we are not surprised as to why when we see him on the big screen, we could feel his aura shining bright at us. From his attitude, his thought, and the way he speaks, everything about him tells us that this man is ‘the real deal’. “Vithaya Pansringarm” is no doubt one of the Thais who will surely get global recognition in the near future to come.
